The 3 Body Solution/If You Can’t Follow Through, This Is Why

Health Begins with energy

What is willpower, anyhow?

A friend recently said, “Jesse, do you see how strong your willpower is?”  My wife often tells me I’m good at “deciding I’m going to do something and doing it.”  And it’s true, I regularly challenge myself to change.  Losing weight, building muscle, giving up alcohol or weed, cutting sugar or dairy.  I tend to pick something and go all in.

But lately I’ve been wondering if this is really willpower?  Do I genuinely have something others don’t?  Or is something else happening entirely?

What I’ve realized is that this has very little to do with willpower as most people understand it.  Everyone has willpower.  Truly.  For some people, it takes willpower to sit on the couch all day.  For others, it takes willpower to get off the couch.  Every action requires some form of energy, intention, or restraint.

Our life’s purpose is to gradually align our higher will with the Higher Soul, or the part of us already aligned with the Will of God.

And if the word God feels complicated, stay with me.  Master Choa often said that some of the most spiritual people are atheists.  Not because of what they believe, but because they live the higher truths of meaning, purpose, discipline, goodwill, kindness, service, and love, even if they reject the labels.

The lower truths are instinctual and include comfort-seeking, avoiding discomfort, emotional reactivity, impulsive behavior, and survival-based habits.  They’re not “bad”, they’re simply unconscious.  And we all have them.

So what does this mean for willpower?

It means there are two types of willpower:

  • Instinctual Will (Lower Will) - The force that keeps us safe, comfortable, unchanged, and undisturbed.
  • Soul Will (Higher Will) - The force that pulls us toward alignment, purpose, integrity, and our true nature.

Instinctual will is the voice that says, “Stay where it’s familiar.  Don’t upset anyone.  Don’t rock the boat.”  Soul will asks, “When I look in the mirror, do I like who I see?”  It’s the deeper urge to honor your gifts, values, quirks, and potential, because deep down, you already know who you’re meant to be.  When you start living from this place, growth stops feeling like punishment and starts feeling like relief.  The only way to experience this alignment is to break free from ego-driven, survival-based patterns.

In Arhatic Yoga, this is the beginning of soul realization. In everyday terms, it’s simply congruence and asking yourself, “Am I being the person I actually want to be?”  When your inner world is pointed in different directions, everything feels like friction. When it’s pointed in one direction, everything begins to flow.

So the real question becomes, “Which part of me is making the choice, and are my head, heart, and purpose aligned?”

If you struggle to follow through on the things you know would make you the best version of yourself, it’s simply a sign that your lower will is currently stronger than your higher will.  This doesn’t mean you’re undisciplined or broken, it simply means you’re operating from safety, not purpose.

Before we even talk about alignment, we have to talk about safety.  If your lower will is running the show, it’s not because something is wrong with you, it’s because some part of you does not feel safe enough to change.  Most people try to overcome this by forcing themselves into bigger goals or harsher discipline, but that just activates the same fear that’s already there.   The lower will digs in deeper.

What actually works is creating safe wins.  Safe wins are small, doable actions that show your system, “We’re okay. Nothing bad is happening.”   When safety increases, the emotional resistance decreases. Only then can the higher will even begin to come online.   Alignment isn’t step one.   Safety is step one.

Often this means identifying old emotional patterns or fears that once protected you but now hold you back.

Many people discover fears like:

  • “If I change, people won’t accept me.”
  • “If I succeed, I’ll lose something familiar.”
  • “If I set boundaries, I’ll upset someone.”

Naming the fear weakens it.  Once named, you can choose a different strategy.

Once safety is in place, clarity becomes easier. And once clarity strengthens, alignment stops being a fight and starts becoming a natural next step. This is why willpower is not about pushing yourself harder. It is about getting the different parts of you to relax, breathe, and move in the same direction.

Tiny actions help. Tiny wins help even more. Not because they are impressive, but because they are safe. Each one whispers to the lower will, “See. We survived. We are okay. We can keep going.”

And slowly, the higher will begins to wake up. Not as pressure, but as a quiet internal pull toward the life you already sense you are meant to live.

So if things feel hard right now, do not assume you are lacking discipline. Assume your system just needs a little more safety. A little more compassion. A smaller step. A gentler starting point. From there, alignment becomes available. And once alignment arrives, momentum follows.

That is when willpower stops feeling like effort and starts feeling like truth.
