Refresh Your Fitness Routine with Simple Weekly Goals

No matter where you are on your fitness journey, you've likely hit that feeling of boredom—or what’s known as a “plateau.” Plateaus aren't just for bodybuilders maxing out heavy lifts; they’re also for anyone who finds their routine losing its impact. Whether you’re strength training, walking a quarter mile, or anywhere in between, your body adapts to whatever you do and craves a new challenge. This is why setting regular fitness goals can make all the difference.

Fitness goals don’t have to be grand. Sure, signing up for a triathlon or Tough Mudder can be a motivating long-term goal. But today, let’s focus on short-term, weekly goals that are achievable and beneficial for anyone.

Here’s what I recommend: each week (I like Sundays for this), take a moment to set a simple, realistic fitness goal. Keep it small—relative to where you are right now. If you’re just starting, a daily walk might be huge for you; for others, it might mean running a little faster or adding a yoga session for flexibility. The key is continuous, steady improvement.

Setting weekly fitness goals offers many benefits:

  • Eliminates Boredom – Changing up your routine keeps things interesting. Listen to what excites you, whether it’s a new dance workout, swimming, or hiking, and embrace variety.
  • Increases Follow-Through – Scheduling your movement time makes you much more likely to stick with it. When you plan ahead and set a specific time, you’re prioritizing your health over distractions.
  • Boosts Mental Health – Physical activity is linked to improved mental well-being. Creating a plan and sticking to it builds confidence and a sense of accomplishment, improving both body and mind.

Try it out! Write your goal on a sticky note, place it somewhere visible, and commit. It’s one of the simplest ways to bring powerful benefits to your life, one week at a time.

Mind Mastery Techniques

Strengthen Your Willpower Through Fasting

Today, let’s explore fasting—not from a physical health perspective, but as a tool to build mental resilience and strengthen willpower. Before diving in, here’s the usual disclaimer: I am not a doctor. If you're considering fasting or any other health-related change, please consult your physician to ensure it’s safe for you. Everyone's body is different, so if you have any concerns, check in with a professional first. For most people, however, short-term fasting can be a safe and transformative practice.

Fasting can be a powerful way to challenge and build willpower. Willpower is essentially our ability to act on goals and stay committed to desired outcomes. Think of it as a mental muscle that fasting can help you strengthen—similar to how regular exercise strengthens the body.

When you fast, the experience often becomes more about mind over matter than any physical demand. Most of us won’t suffer harm from skipping meals for a day, and I’ve even known people to fast for up to a week with positive results. Yet, for many, the idea of skipping a single meal feels daunting, especially in a culture that revolves around consistent meal times. But in fasting, we’re actively training our minds, not just our bodies.

In the beginning, your mind might rebel, telling you that you’re “too hungry” or that fasting isn’t for you. However, with practice, a resilient part of your mind will emerge that says, “I’ve got this.” This exercise allows you to differentiate between the reactive mind—full of cravings and impulses—and the controlled mind, which stays focused and in charge. Developing this level of control over your mind is transformative, empowering you with choices over automatic responses.

The willpower you build through fasting doesn’t just stop there; it spills over into other areas of your life. Soon, you’ll notice it influencing your choices around exercise, emotional management, sleep, and even habits like alcohol consumption. It’s truly a superpower.

If you’re new to fasting, start small. Begin by reducing portion sizes or skipping one meal, then gradually increase your fasting window as your willpower grows. Soon, you’ll find yourself more confident, with a renewed sense of control over your choices and life. Remember, willpower is the key, and fasting can be an incredible tool to unlock it.

Balancing Your Emotional Well-Being

The Hidden Truth About Anger: It’s Not What You Think

I realize that what I’m about to say might sound a bit controversial. Much of what I share challenges commonly held beliefs woven into our society, our families, and even our individual identities. These concepts may push you to see things from a different angle, but if you’re open to exploring new perspectives, they could bring unexpected growth and harmony into your life.

Here’s a bold statement about anger: All anger you experience—every single instance—is never truly about the person, event, or situation that seems to trigger it. It’s always about something within you.

We often find it easy to blame others for our emotions. Whether it’s the person who cut us off in traffic, a critical comment from a friend, or political ideas we find unsettling, the anger we feel seems outwardly justified. But consider this: what if the things we find upsetting could inspire responses other than anger—like courage, clarity, or empathy?

The truth is, unchecked anger is destructive, and its primary victim is ourselves. When we let anger take control, it distorts our perspective and drains our energy, often leading to regret. However, transforming anger into a constructive force is possible. Imagine the difference between reacting in anger versus approaching the same issue with a calm, clear mind. Anger may feel powerful, but clarity and calm have lasting, positive effects on us and those around us.

So, how can we master anger? Here are three steps:

  • Control the Initial Reaction: When you feel anger rise, step back. Find an outlet, whether through exercise, meditation, or simply taking a few deep breaths. Creating space between your emotion and your response prevents anger from taking the reins.
  • Identify the True Emotion: Anger often masks deeper feelings like fear, insecurity, or sadness. By honestly exploring what’s beneath the surface, we take steps toward understanding and healing those hidden vulnerabilities.
  • Release and Let Go: Once you identify the underlying emotion, it often starts to dissipate. Recognizing that anger might stem from long-held insecurities or fears helps us release it, freeing us to focus on how we truly want to feel and respond.

When we approach the world from a place of courage, assertiveness, and clarity, we become more effective agents of change. We can tackle real problems with thoughtfulness and strength, rather than letting anger fuel us into reactive responses. This simple shift transforms our impact on the world, helping us build lasting peace and harmony.
