Gut microbes are the trillions of tiny organisms living in your digestive tract. These microscopic friends, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, play a crucial role in your overall health. They’re not just bystanders; they actively help digest food, produce essential vitamins, regulate your immune system, and even influence your mood and energy levels.
Why Gut Microbes Matter
Your gut microbes are like a hidden ecosystem within your body. When in balance, they support digestion, boost immunity, and help keep inflammation at bay. But when things go awry, imbalances can lead to digestive issues, weakened immunity, and a host of chronic conditions, from IBS to anxiety.
How We Impact Them Negatively
Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle can be tough on these tiny helpers. Diets high in processed foods, sugar, and artificial additives can harm beneficial microbes and allow harmful ones to thrive. Antibiotics, while sometimes necessary, can also wipe out good bacteria, leaving your gut vulnerable. Stress, lack of sleep, and exposure to environmental toxins can further disrupt this delicate balance.
How to Support Your Gut Microbes
Supporting your gut health is simpler than you might think. Eating a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods provides the fiber that beneficial microbes love. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir introduce healthy bacteria directly into your gut. Reducing stress through meditation, exercise, and quality sleep also nurtures a balanced microbiome.
Why It Matters
A healthy gut microbiome is foundational to your overall well-being. By taking care of your gut microbes, you’re not just improving digestion—you’re boosting your immunity, enhancing mental clarity, and setting the stage for a long, healthy life.
Take a moment today to appreciate the invisible world within you and make choices that support your gut—and your health!
Sometimes, the secrets to life are so simple that we easily agree with them in theory, yet struggle to implement them daily. One such secret is the key to maintaining and nourishing all relationships: simply GIVE LOVE.
Notice I didn’t say, “give love if…” or “give love when…” Every day, we’re presented with opportunities to grow—whether it’s dealing with an employee, a spouse, or a family member who drives you crazy. How you react in these moments will define the future of that relationship. Even if you don’t say anything out loud, harboring thoughts of criticism, frustration, or annoyance will harm the relationship.
Take this example: you’re in a leadership position at work, responsible for a team of employees. One of them—let’s call him Joe—is good at his job, but something about him just doesn’t click with you. You might tell your spouse, “I don’t like him, I’d never be friends with him outside of work.” That’s fine; you don’t need to be friends with everyone. However, if you want this relationship to improve, you need to express more love in your thoughts, words, and actions. Instead of assuming Joe is making your life harder on purpose, consider a new perspective—one that aligns more closely with Joe’s. Maybe you remind Joe of his mean sister, triggering him. You can continue to foster negative energy between you, or you can choose to break the cycle. Think and speak positively about Joe, and everything will change.
Now, to be clear, if someone isn’t doing their job, as a leader, you may need to take actions that won’t make them happy. But even in difficult situations, like letting someone go, it’s possible to act with compassion and love.
The next time someone rubs you the wrong way and you feel frustration rising, stop yourself. Instead, send them words of encouragement from your heart. Say something like, “I don’t know what’s going on between us, but I wish you the best, I wish you inner peace, and I wish you all the love in the world.” This simple act will transform your relationship with that person. The more love we give, the more we receive. If you’re receiving something you don’t like, it might be a wake-up call that you’re getting exactly what you’re giving. What can you give instead?
"The purpose is not to suppress emotions, but to regulate them." — Master Choa Kok Sui
For me, learning to regulate my emotions has been one of the most challenging aspects of life—more difficult even than quitting cigarettes and drugs or losing over 100 pounds. Some people are naturally gifted at emotional regulation. If you’re one of them, congratulations. But for most of us, we know someone who seems unshakeable, almost heartless in their emotional steadiness.
Perhaps the biggest fear about regulating emotions is the belief that it will make us cold, emotionless, and indifferent. I used to take pride in "wearing my heart on my sleeve," believing it was a strength that everyone could see how I was feeling at any given moment. Whether it was joy, anger, frustration, or sadness, I wasn’t afraid to show my emotions, even to the point of using my ability to cry without regret as a way to support this belief.
But true power lies in regulation, not suppression. Suppression implies rejection—pushing emotions away as if they don’t exist. Regulation, on the other hand, means acknowledging our emotions without letting them dictate our actions or words. It doesn’t mean we never express emotions, but that we do so with intentionality.
When you become intentional about which emotions you choose to express and which to let pass, you’ll start to notice that most emotions don’t require a response. By regulating and feeling them without losing control, they will naturally fade. If your life is in danger and fear demands expression, by all means, scream at the bear. But otherwise, take back control of which emotions you allow to rule your life.
