The 3 Body Solution/Listening vs. Replying: The Key to Emotional Health

Listening vs. Replying: The Key to Emotional Health

Physical Wellness Essentials

Feeling Prana in Your Body

I've spent a lot of time discussing the effects of prana on various aspects of our lives, especially our physical well-being. Prana is very subtle, and it’s easy to ignore its existence entirely. However, embracing prana can significantly enhance your life and health.

To help you understand prana more deeply, let's revisit its basic principles and explore how energy feels in our bodies. Here are a few areas where energy is most palpable:

Overeating
Imagine indulging in a buffet of your favorite foods, guilt-free. You pile your plate high, savoring each bite, and keep going until you're uncomfortably full. How do you feel afterward? Likely bloated, tired, and uncomfortable. This is because you've overloaded your body with prana from food, creating energy congestion and physical stress.

Alcohol and Marijuana
While marijuana and alcohol might bring temporary relief and relaxation, their long-term effects can be quite taxing on your energy centers. Consumption of these substances impacts key energy centers in your body, leading to hangovers and other negative effects. Alcohol stresses the stomach's energy centers, while smoking affects the heart and lungs, leaving you with headaches and fogginess.

Exercise
On a positive note, exercise cleanses your energy centers. It flushes out undesirable energy from poor dietary choices and environmental factors, leaving you feeling invigorated. Your heart pumps, blood flows to your extremities, and your muscles are activated, receiving fresh, clean energy.

These examples illustrate how prana feels in the body. Tuning into your body’s sensations can indicate the quality of energy you're consuming. Whether you feel shaky, calm, or in pain, these feelings reflect the energy within. By making healthier choices, you can improve your energy and overall well-being.

Start tuning into your body's energy today and make choices that nourish your prana. You'll soon notice a positive shift in how you feel.

Mind Mastery Techniques

Vacation Mindset

"I'm on vacation, every single day because I love my occupation." - Dirty Heads

Gems of wisdom can come from many places, including a well-known new-age reggae band called Dirty Heads.

Having just returned from vacation, I'm acutely aware of the concept of relaxation and renewal. Historically, vacations were my mental reset button. Working 40 hours a week in a stressful job left me frustrated and questioning my purpose. I was living for the weekend, and the annual vacation was a beacon of hope.

But here's the exciting part: this cycle isn't inevitable! If you’re among the fortunate few who love their career and find joy in their daily work, congratulations! For the rest, there's hope.

The key to transforming my life was adopting a vacation mindset every day. Here’s how my vacation differs from the 8-5 grind:

  • Anticipation: On vacation, I wake up excited for the day, unlike dreading a slate of meetings.
  • Flexibility: I'm open to trying new things or doing nothing at all.
  • Freedom: I let go of rigid to-do lists.
  • Joy: I focus on activities that bring joy and excitement.
  • Creativity: I create from the heart, not just for a paycheck.
  • Acceptance: I become less critical and judgmental.

The secret is to bring that vacation mindset into everyday life. Recognizing that my mindset changes on vacation allowed me to recreate that feeling daily. It’s not an everyday occurrence, but it’s a goal worth striving for.

What's your mindset? Are you enduring grueling days, looking forward to rare vacations? Or do you love your work so much it feels like a vacation every day? I hope it's the latter!

Balancing Your Emotional Well-Being

Follow Your Heart

As Stephen Covey wisely said, "Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply." If you find yourself in this pattern, I offer you my deepest compassion. My aim is not to judge but to share my experience and advocate for a different approach that can enhance your quality of life and relationships.

So, what does listening have to do with the prana of emotional well-being? It's simple. We consume prana not only from the physical things we put into our bodies but also from our relationships in the form of love, frustration, or connection. Every interaction involves an exchange of prana that can either nourish or deplete us. Healthier prana from positive relationships means a healthier you.

Two Approaches to Listening

  • Listening Intently: When you listen without your own agenda, you open yourself to being changed by another person. It requires setting aside your ego—your need to be right, to know everything, to avoid being wrong, or taking things personally. Holding space for another person and validating their experience, regardless of your own beliefs, is an act of love. The speaker, in turn, expels negative energies while receiving silent support and care from you.
  • Listening Defensively: When engaging with someone who isn’t truly listening, doesn't seem to care, or always takes things personally, there’s no healthy energy exchange. Instead of holding space, you create an energetic wall, blocking support, love, and understanding. This is akin to feeling physically unwell and then eating something that makes you feel worse.

The Misconception About Listening

Listening doesn't mean you agree with everything being said. It means recognizing that the speaker's perspective is true and valid for them, even if it’s not for you. Listening allows people to be seen and heard, helping them work through their problems or unstable perspectives just by voicing them.

Try simply listening without trying to fix the problem. Feel the love and connection that flows between you, potentially mending years of misunderstanding and ego-driven interactions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Intentional Listening: Focus on understanding, not replying.
  • Energy Exchange: Healthy prana flows from supportive interactions.
  • Validation: Acknowledge the speaker's perspective without necessarily agreeing.

Embrace the power of intentional listening and transform your relationships and well-being
