Sometimes it feels easier to keep eating all the delicious foods we know aren’t good for us. If only our bodies thrived on ice cream, cookies, cheese dips, and alcohol, we’d never have to worry! While some people might not crave these indulgences, most of us have at least a few treats we enjoy that aren’t exactly nutritious.
Life is about balance, so I don’t advocate for cutting out everything that brings you joy. Instead, I recommend the "90% rule"—making healthy, life-affirming food choices 90% of the time to fuel your body with energy. If you’ve used up your 10% on fun, celebratory eating, it might be time to reset your body’s health balance. Here’s how you can get started:
My best advice is simple: just start. Even one small positive change is a step in the right direction. The future is made up of "right nows," so what’s your next move?
If you're interested in 1:1 health or life coaching, I offer a free 60-minute breakthrough session to help you identify your goals. You're guaranteed to have at least one breakthrough during this session on the steps you can take moving forward. Message me for more details!
Willpower is your superpower. Defined as "control exerted to do something or restrain influences," willpower is often tested at celebrations, birthdays, and other events where food takes center stage. If you're trying to reset your health, it’s a good idea to plan around these tempting occasions. But what if you can't—or simply don't want to wait? This is where willpower becomes essential.
Willpower is a mindset. It's a decision to do something, no matter what. Before willpower comes into play, there must be a goal. These two work hand in hand because without a goal, there’s no motivation to change your behavior.
Start with a Goal—Your “Why”
Why do you want to eat better? Is it because you’re unhappy with how you look in the mirror? Do you want to fit into a swimsuit or live a longer, healthier life? Whatever your reason, it’s crucial to define it clearly. Your "why" is your anchor when things get tough—and they will.
Remembering Your Why
Once you’ve established your why, willpower is simply about remembering it. This can be the hard part. Visual reminders like photos on the wall or a rubber band around your wrist can serve as gentle nudges to stay focused on what’s important, especially when life gets busy and distractions take over.
If you find yourself thinking about your why but still making choices that don’t align with your goals, it’s a sign that your why isn't strong enough. Take a moment to reflect on why this change is important to you. When your why is compelling enough, nothing can threaten your success. Willpower will come naturally, making it easier to say no to temptations and yes to the changes you want to make.
Embrace Your Superpower
Remember, willpower is not just about resisting temptations—it’s about making choices that align with your deepest goals. Find your why, use it to fuel your willpower, and watch as you make powerful changes in your life.
We've previously discussed emotional eating and the various ways it can show up in our lives. Emotional eating can be challenging and sometimes even comforting, especially when we're dealing with something uncomfortable. It's important to have compassion for ourselves when food seems to be the only thing that makes us feel better. However, it’s equally important to recognize what's happening and find a way to move forward.
The first step, as with most things, is awareness. Recognizing that you're emotionally eating, instead of unconsciously devouring food, is the way out. This awareness doesn't mean you have to stop immediately. But when you are aware of it, every time you eat emotionally, you're consciously choosing it, rather than feeling like a victim with no control.
I’ll admit, sometimes food does help when life gets tough. But remember, when you find yourself reaching for comfort food, it might mean that something else in you needs nourishment. Our bodies aren't meant to be sustained by sugar and alcohol—they need real energy. When you indulge in foods that don't support your energy needs, you might be trying to nourish an emotion that isn't being addressed.
Compassion is key here. Reflect on what you're trying to feed emotionally. Often, there’s something inside that wants to be expressed. Ask yourself: Where are your needs not being met? Where are you not doing what’s right for yourself? What’s missing?
Emotional eating can be a powerful clue that something needs to shift in your life. Start today by simply noticing this and being open to discovering what might be "off." The answers will come just by asking these questions. It might not be immediate, but with time, the path forward will present itself.
