Calorie counting—you either love it or hate it. Some find it too rigid, while others, like myself, enjoy the structure it brings. While it may not be for everyone, it can be a valuable tool, even if used periodically.
Why Count Calories?
Awareness creates transformation. Our habits can blind us to what's really happening with our food choices. That’s why I recommend evaluating your calorie intake occasionally—at least once a year. You don’t need an app or a spreadsheet for this. Just take a moment to assess how you're fueling your body. If you do this before the holidays, you’ll be better equipped to make mindful choices without the "just go for it" mentality.
Here are a few tips to guide you:
Detach and Observe
Treat this as an objective exercise—observe the data without judgment. If you’re eating more than you need, that’s okay! Awareness is the first step. Your body will adjust as you move toward your ideal intake. And if you find yourself slipping back into old habits? No big deal. Simply re-evaluate and make the necessary adjustments.
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. If you need help determining your ideal range, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to assist.
What I'm about to share might seem simple, but I urge you to reflect deeply on this—it could change everything you believe.
As adults, we accept many of our behaviors—anxiety, money worries, insecurities, or even addictions—as "just who we are." But most of these patterns were set before we turned six years old, in response to our caretakers. Whether you grew up in a loving home or a difficult one, your behaviors today are often reflections of those early experiences.
As children, we unconsciously mirror the emotions and struggles of our caretakers—whether it was a stressed parent worried about money or a happy guardian with hidden issues. We took on these behaviors in an effort to feel safe and loved, even though we were too young to make such decisions about ourselves./
So, what can we do now? Recognize this programming for what it is. Realizing that your early experiences shaped your beliefs empowers you to make new, conscious choices as an adult. This awareness is the key to changing your life.
Our caretakers’ influence shaped our decisions, which shaped our beliefs, our identity, our actions, and ultimately, our results. By revisiting the decisions we made as children, we can consciously choose a new path—and that's the real secret to lasting change.
Subconsciously, we carry all our past selves within us. You may be 45 with a family, but part of you is still that 11-year-old. And sometimes, that younger version of us needs attention.
As adults, we take life so seriously. There's no room for mistakes, fun, or just goofing off. Instead, we rebel in socially acceptable ways—like indulging in food, alcohol, or even substances—to find some relief. These small pleasures, like a Friday happy hour or a late-night snack, give us moments of escape from our busy, stressful lives.
But food isn’t meant to fill an emotional void. It’s meant to fuel our bodies. If you find yourself eating to soothe your feelings, it might be a sign that you're craving excitement, self-care, or just more joy in life. Maybe you need a healthy outlet for rebellion—like playing a harmless prank or treating yourself to a weekend of relaxation instead of reaching for comfort food.
The key is awareness. If you catch yourself emotionally eating, ask yourself what’s missing. Even if you finish that pint of ice cream, take a moment to reflect on what deeper need is going unmet. By understanding the message behind your cravings, you can choose a healthier way to fill your emotional cup. After all, you can't pour from an empty cup—self-care is essential to showing up fully for yourself and others.
